Tom Custance

Partner

Tom is a partner in the litigation and dispute resolution department. He has extensive experience in all aspects of the litigation, arbitration and mediation processes across a broad range of commercial disputes, primarily in the financial services sector. Much of this has been in the insurance field, where Tom has acted in several substantial policy coverage disputes, as well as advising on policy wording issues. Another particular area of expertise is employment-related disputes, where Tom has acted in many high profile cases, including team moves, bonus disputes and claims involving the enforcement of restrictive covenants and confidentiality obligations.

As a solicitor advocate, Tom undertakes regular court work. He appeared at the Southall and Ladbroke Grove Rail Accident Public Inquiries as advocate for one of the parties.  

Tom has been frequently quoted in both the national and legal press, and has appeared on CNBC News and BBC2's Working Lunch.  

Tom joined Fox Williams in 2001 and headed up the litigation and dispute resolution department from 2001 to 2011. Tom was previously a partner with Herbert Smith. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1989 having graduated from Bristol University with an honours degree in classics in 1985. He subsequently qualified as a solicitor advocate (higher courts civil) in 1997. Tom is a member of the Solicitors Association of Higher Court Advocates and the London Solicitors Litigation Association, and is a Freeman of the City of London Solicitors Company.
